Yeh I agree, they were not a frrail band and the lyrics where supposed to have irony to them unlike alot of chart music. I have everything they ever put out, inculding tshirts (very faded), badges, 4AD xmal postcards and all their vinyl. They were special and they have all moved on. They played together only once with The cocteau twins on the first this mortal coil album.

Track 11. Not Me
Robbie Grey (Modern English), vocals
Manuela Rickers (Xmal Deutschland), guitar
Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), guitar
Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins), bass

I used to love Xmal in the 870's. they were quite a cutting bad especially around the time of Cocteau twins Garlands and Birthday Party. A friend of mine who once worked for a label in Berlin saw Anja Huwe at the front desk of the label> that was the last thing I heard about them. that was in 1995.
Incubus succubus was a graet song and 'Dein qual ist meine lust' is still the only german I know even though I live in a German-speaking city. HAHAHA.

It is most certainly the music that matters!

I was just curious if anyone had some dirt...

I recently got the "Matador" 12", which is different from the version I was familiar with, I'm not sure what release it's from.

When they were good they were great!

While I seem to have very little memory of this band, other than thinking they are pretentious... I recently picked up a copy of Toscin. At first I thought "BOring!" but then I listened to it some more while I was CLeaning my apartment and got really into it. The vocals do sound a little like Liz, actually alot like Liz. This album kind of sounds like another possible direction for the Twins in the "Garlands" era.
and yeah, who cares if they're assholes... a lot of rockstars are.
My good friend once waited on the Talking Heads, and said that they were total assholes.
Speaking of waiting on rockstars, she also got hit on my David Lovering when he ate at her restaraunt, and offered her free tickets to a pixies show!
Kristen Hersh is very sweet, so is Aimee Mann.
Assholes or not, isn't it the music that really matters?

I'm a big Xmal fan.

One of the things I think that proves they're (or other similar bands) good is the fact that if you take away the faux drama there's an actual, talented band there. I always felt thier songs had real "meat" to them.

She was part of a few other local bands up through the mid 90's, none ever got their foot in the door like Da, though. Currently she's working as a research librarian/exhibition coordinator at the *big deal* library in town, no not that one, the other one.

She's been in contact with folks who want to repress the "Busted at Oz" compilation that featured two tracks from Da. Unfortunately it seems to be mired in copyright hassles or some such noise, at the moment.

I'm sure she would be flattered that you remember Da fondly!

As for Xmal Deutschland, I tend to like my lyrics unintelligible or in a language I don't know, they seem to fall somewhere inbetween. I agree with your comment about "the noise" of it all.

Way too many a great song has been ruined for me by inane lyrics...

"Bluebeard" by Cocteau Twins par example...

Dude! I remember Da! I was in Chicago and volunteered at WNUR from 86-90. Da had broken up by then but I heard them on some of the Chicagho punk complilations. Haven't heard the band in like fifteen years but I remmber really liking them. What's your sister doing now?

BTW, I also reaaly dug Xmal Deutschland, though I haven't listened to them in awhile either. Never tried to parse out the lyrics or anything, just really enjoyed the noise...

It's a he said/she said thing...

My older sister was involved in the Chicago music scene in the 80's in a band called Da, as well as a few others. (I recently found out they opened a show for Bauhaus once, crazy.)

I remember her telling me she knew someone who toured with Xmal Deutschland at one point, in what capacity I'm not sure. This guy told her that they were total assholes, super serious , no sense of humour jerks...

I don't mean to spread any lies, this is just what I've heard. While I enjoy their music, it's so melodramatic, it has to be taken with a grain of salt, in my opinion at least.

I recently got the "Sickle Moon" 12", I'm kinda disappointed, not so great upon first listening. I still love "Toscin".

I always got the impression that Anja Huwe (vocals/lyrics) was just milking the whole "I'm so scary" thing. Loads of fun, but a big put-on. I hadn't heard the 'assholes' description either, but then, one so rarely hears about Xmal Deutschland anyway. My favorite track has always been "Polarlicht."

Sure their lyrics are passionate both in terms of love and hate or fear...
It is actually a pity that they are not mentioned, for they were one of the leading bands in the so called Neue Deutsche Welle...It was not only Nena or Trio (urgh!) or DAF.
