Each one of these works makes me remember where I was when I first saw the art and heard the music. Our memories of these songs would be so different if we did not have the brilliant artwork to remember them by. Here are some that come to mind for me:

Belly - Star
Pixies - Doolitle
Cocteau Twins - Treasure
Pail Saints - In Ribbons
Lush - Spooky

damie Michelle. Ima ax for dat on my birfday.

Wasn't it always great flipping through LPs (and later CDs) in a record store -and spotting that typical v23 cover art? I remember buying the first Throwing Muses and This Mortal Coil LPs the same day. Not knowing anything about either...not being disappointed at all.

Yes yes, that book is totally worth getting. I remember I went to an exhibit of Oliver's work here in LA, and they had some original prints [ones with registration marks on them] for sale... I should've gotten some... They were beautiful!!! And seeing all the posters and artwork by Oliver in different format and stuff, it was simply stunning... That was like 6 years ago?! Maybe longer.

4AD changed my life literally... not just Oliver's work, but the music, the whole package... It gave me new eyes!

PS. I remember watching TMC's video Acid, Bitter and Sad for the first time... euphoria!! That's still my fave video of all time! K, 'nough said!

          Toodle-pip!

So true! I guess some of mine would be...

All the layering on the Colorbox artwork (LP, 12" for Baby I Love You So, etc.)
The photography of ordinary objects in His Name Is Alive's Mouth By Mouth and Stars On ESP.
    ...all of the Cocteau Twins?
    There are so many!

Speaking of ordinary objects, I recall the cover to the Wolfgang Press' "Birdwood Cage" was... f-ing brilliant!

Re: TWP, Birdwood Cage... I always thought the photo was kind of a tribute to Andy Warhol - an antique toilet in grass. When I saw them live on the Queer tour, I took Birdwood Cage backstage & got them all to sign the toilet.

Speaking of toilets and TWP... on that very tour, I was supposed to do a radio interview w/ the band, but since they got to the club late, we did the interview by phone instead of bringing them to the station. Because the opening band were sound-checking while Mick Allen was on the phone, he took the phone into the club bathroom (and we all know the grossness factor of club bathrooms!) and did the interview from there. What a mensch.

    Lush - Scar
    Unrest - Perfect Teeth
Belly - Gepetto (love the unfocused pic of the star-eyed, angel-haired doll)

For giggles - production note on Unrest's Perfect Teeth (since I was just looking at it)... production: Simon LeBon.

I like the earlier ones, especially the cover art of all the Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and Dead Can Dance.

The LP cover of 'Spleen and Ideal' by DCD is magnificent.

I think they were known as '23 Envelope' back then.

        to Razerbern:
        FYI

Dead Can Dance actually chose not to hire Vaughan for their covers,
all the design was done by Brendan Perry (including "Spleen and Ideal"),
untill later, they hired CHris bigg of v23 for "Into the Labyrinth, Towards the Within, and Spiritchaser."

Throwing muses also frequently used Chris Bigg instead of Vaughan, including some of the SHinro Ohtake pieces I mentioned below.

ALso, the Cocteau Twins stopped using Vaughan's design after Victorialand.

(which incidentally, was when 23 envelope disbanded and became v23).

i used to have a set of v.23 posters that came in a tube... i think it was volume 2 or something... i purchased the set about 13 years ago for like maybe $35 or so... was gonna have them framed eventually... but they got burned up in a fire last year along with 99% of my earthy possessions

so, late to this thread, but...
there are soooo many, it's hard to pick, but what comes to mind now is:

      "Mouth by Mouth" by HNIA
anything featuring SHinro Otake (House Tornado, TM's self titled, Hips and Makers, Strings, Safari, the Curse)
      "Love" by Heidi Berry
      "Clan of Xymox"
all CTwins, esp "Pink Opaque" and "Head Over Heels"
      "Doolittle" by Pixies
"Secrets of the Beehive" by David Sylvian

In addition to "Visceral Pleasures", check out "this rimy river", which is an exhibition catalog to a Vaughan Oliver show in LA about 12 years ago.
